The above article was printed in the Sunday Citizen on 23rd November. We would like to clarify the following:

  • we never used language such as "extortionist ring", "syndicate" etc and in general the language of the article is somewhat misleading, although the facts are generally correct. We never implied that the corruption extends beyond a few immigration officials in Morogoro. We are reasonably confident that the immigration headquarters authorities in Dar es Salaam are dealing with the issue appropriately.
  • we did not contact the journalist or ask him to write about this. He picked it up from a forwarded email. He phoned us on Friday and we said we had filed a complaint and requested him not to publish until the relevant authorities had time to deal with it. However evidently he decided to put it in the newspaper anyway.
  • it says that Elaine "works for an American agency in Dar es Salaam". This is incorrect as I work for the University Computing Centre and I was in a meeting with an American agency at the time.
  • it says we filed a complaint with the assistant director for Immigration Services in Dar es Salaam. In fact we filed the written complaint with the Principal Commissioner for Immigration, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs and the Minister for Home Affairs. We talked in person to Mr Nombo who is the head of investigations at the immigration department who was very courteous and encouraged us to file the complaint.
